Expressionist Theatre with Cheryl Stapleton

from £25.00

Saturday 4th October 10.30-4.30

About the Workshop:

Break free from realism and dive into a world where theatre is bold, dreamlike, and powerfully expressive. Expressionism invites performers to unleash their full physical and vocal range, transforming inner emotion into vivid stage imagery.

This practical, high-energy workshop is designed for actors, students, teachers, and theatre-makers who want to push beyond naturalism and explore the limitless possibilities of expressionist performance. Through movement, voice, and ensemble play, you’ll discover how to create theatre that is raw, poetic, and larger than life.

This workshop covers:

  • Corporeal Mime — turning impulse into striking stage image.

  • Grotesque & Bouffon — exaggerated, satirical characterisation.

  • The Expressionist Chorus — ensemble work sculpting dreamlike worlds.

  • Physicalising Language — soundscaping, rhythm, and collective voice.

  • Actor–Spectator Dynamic — breaking the fourth wall with direct address and self-reflection.

We’ll touch on extracts from playwrights including Büchner, Strindberg, Sophie Treadwell and Steven Berkoff, as a springboard for imaginative, physical performance.

Key Take Aways:

For performers –

  • Stretch beyond your comfort zone and awaken your full expressive potential.

  • Create theatre with minimal reliance on set, props, or costume.

  • Unlock a toolkit for devising bold, actor-centred theatre.

For teachers –

  • Challenge every student to discover new possibilities.

  • Develop ensemble complicité through movement and voice.

  • Provide exciting new routes into devising and performance.

 What participants say:
